Billie Jean (Played on Beer Bottles)

This video brought the biggest smile to my face for some reason. I always admire folks who can take something as simple as a bottle and may good music with it. I hope you enjoy it like I did.

Domino Stick Bombs

It doesn’t take much to entertain me sometimes, but this just kind of blew me away. 🙂 I do have to admit, by the time the video finished, I was wondering if the creators enjoyed cleaning up the mess as much as they did creating it.

The Hazards of Backyard Chickens

If you happen to own chickens, do yourself a favor and check out this video from One Girls Rant:

She is so right.  Our chickens have names.  They are basically pets that lay eggs.  Not only do they have names, but they are entertaining to watch, as they all have different personalities.  In fact, Charity can tell me a story about one of them, and I can figure out who it is most of the time by the actions she is describing.

Know this, if you get chickens you will not be unaffected.  😀

The Chicken Chronicles

My egg-laying ladies have just finished another record-breaking week.  The new record is 38 eggs, or 3.8 eggs a week per bird.  I am expecting an average next spring of about 5-6 eggs per bird, so we are still several eggs a week short of that, but we are getting there.  If things go as they have in past weeks, they should lay a total of 42-44 eggs this week.

Speaking of records, today they once again tied the record for the most eggs in a day with seven!  This was a special day for another reason though.  We have our first green egg!  All of our Easter Eggers have laid blue eggs so far, with the possible exception of a possible pink layer (time will tell if it is a Rhode Island Red with a light-colored egg or not), but we haven’t had a green egg yet.  What that tells me is that we now have a new layer!  Woot!  Let me share a picture:

Seven eggs, including a new green one.

Seven eggs, including a new green one.

The color isn’t perfect in this picture, but the green egg is the second one from the top on the left.

Speaking of that, did you know that a chicken will, more or less, lay the same color egg daily?  I think this is probably most pronounced in Aracanas, Americanas, or Easter Eggers since they lay eggs with more varying degrees of color, but it is true for all birds.  In other words, the pink egg I have mentioned above is laid by one bird, which I have yet to identify.  Since I am not around the house when they are laying, the only way I am going to know for sure, I think, is if I find five reddish brown/pink eggs in one day.  If so, then one of them had to have been laid by one of the Easter Eggers since I only have four Rhode Island Reds.  🙂

I think the egg-laying ladies aren’t sure what to do with the change of the seasons.  We are coming out to let them down to their run a little later than we had been due to the later sunrise, and the last few days they have had the coop in an absolute mess, as if they are chomping at the bit to get downstairs.  I would love to just leave the door open, but I also like the added protection it gives in case a raccoon or an opossum gets into the run during the night somehow.”

One last comment on the eggs for now – last night we had breakfast for supper.  There were enough eggs laid in the last few days to feed my entire family.  Woot!

Oh, one last thing!  Maybe you will enjoy this video as much as I did:

Doing Business Differently

One of my keen interests is learning how businesses separate themselves from the rest of the pack by doing business differently.  I am sure many of you have seen this by now, but if not, do yourself a favor and watch this video now:

What I find so amazing about this is that it was not a complicated idea to think up.  There is no doubt it took some work to pull this off, but the idea is simple: find a way to bless your customers.  The results are fantastic.  I am confident that every one of those customers, barring unforeseen circumstances, will bank with TD Bank the rest of their lives.  Furthermore, they will share this experience enthusiastically with others, who may become customers of the bank.  The benefits don’t stop there though.  With nearly 8 million views and 27,000 likes at the time I write this, this video is now going viral all over the Internet, and TD Bank has spent some of the best marketing dollars it has probably ever spent.

I am sure this video has marketing professionals across the world scrambling to find a way to mimic the success TD Bank has had with this promotion, and the truth of the matter is that most of them will fail.  Unfortunately, as simple as the idea is, it is far too difficult for most of our minds to conceive.  We are so programmed to do business as we have been taught that we cannot see how to do business differently.

Inglorious Fruits and Vegetables

As a home gardener, I am no stranger to funny looking fruits and vegetables.  In fact, many home crops look that way.  It doesn’t change the taste a bit though.  In fact, I am humored at how heirloom vegetables now sell for a premium, but no one minds the oddities that come along with those.  Even so, do you think all tomatoes that come off the commercial vine are round, perfectly red, and almost perfectly sized for a bun?  Of course not!  But do you know what happens to those imperfect tomatoes?  They are likely to be disposed of.  Sure, some may be sold to companies that use those less-than-perfect looking vegetables in their soups or other products, but many are just disposed of.

This video, Inglorious Fruits and Vegetables, does a good job at showing the ridiculousness of our decision making with regards to fruits and vegetables.

What about you?

Would you buy inglorious fruits and vegetables if there were no discount?

If not, would you buy them at a discount?

tomatoes

Yes, I know these aren’t as unlgorious looking as the ones at the link above, but apparently I don’t often take pictures of inglorious vegetables.
